The IBIT Call That’s Too Cheap

Hey trader,

A call option expiration one day out can make a trade look like a steal. You risk a few cents for a shot at a big payout.

IBIT, the ETF that tracks Bitcoin, has a call expiring tomorrow priced at about 39 cents.

If IBIT reaches $47.50 tomorrow, that call is worth $1. If the move doesn’t come in one day, you’re done.

I’d call that low risk and high reward with a very low probability.

Every option loses a little value each day, a cost traders call time decay. A longer call option expiration gives your idea room to play out before the clock wins.

That’s why I’d look 45 to 60 days out instead.

An in-the-money call, with a strike below IBIT’s price, can also stand in for owning shares. I’ll show you how I’d pick that call option expiration and where I’d get out.

It all starts with a $2.5 million bet someone placed on IBIT today.

What That $2.5 Million Print Told Me

Someone bought 32,000 IBIT calls at the 47 strike today for about 80 cents apiece.

The order filled at or above the asking price. That tells me the buyer paid up to get in.

IBIT had company. Gold and silver were rallying too, with GLD up about 1% and SLV up about 2.26%.

Bonds were being bought, which typically supports gold. Those anti-dollar instruments, IBIT included, were all catching a bid.

I traced the 47 strike back to heavy call buying on September 3. Those contracts carry an October 16 call option expiration, which is tomorrow.

That makes $47 both a magnet and an accelerator.

IBIT might get sticky at 47 tomorrow, since that’s roughly today’s high. If it breaks through, the dealers who sold those calls have to buy IBIT to stay hedged.

Their buying can push price up fast.

Why a One-Day Call Option Expiration Rarely Pays

Implied volatility on IBIT is really low right now. Implied volatility is basically the movement the market prices into an option, and low readings make calls look cheap.

Cheap calls still decay. The shorter the call option expiration, the faster that decay hits.

Take the 39-cent call expiring tomorrow. At $47.50, it’s worth $1, and at $48, it’s worth $1.50.

That’s a big payout on a small risk. IBIT has to break 47 and keep running in a single session to get you there.

If the break doesn’t come tomorrow, a one-day call option expiration leaves the trade no time to work.

How I’d Pick a Call Option Expiration on IBIT

I’d rather push my call option expiration out to the 45 to 60 day window. That gives the idea weeks to play out instead of hours.

With the call option expiration set, I’d choose a strike.

Out-of-the-money calls, with strikes above IBIT’s price, cost less. Their odds of paying off are pretty low.

For a stock replacement, I’d go in the money with the 44 call. A stock replacement is simply a call that moves a lot like the shares themselves.

That call carries about a 68 delta. Delta basically measures how much an option moves for every $1 move in the stock.

Here’s how I’d frame the trade, with each piece tied to that one decision about time:

  • Setup: Buy the IBIT 44 call with a call option expiration 45 to 60 days out, near a 68 delta.
  • Cost: About $4.60.
  • Risk: About 30% of what you paid.
  • Adjustment: IBIT needs about a $5 move to push that delta near 85. At that point, I’d roll the call to a strike about $5 higher.

Where I’d Get Out

The low of the day is my line in the sand. If IBIT trades through it and closes below, the setup’s over.

I think IBIT is a pretty interesting setup right now.

Before you buy your next call, look at how much time your call option expiration actually buys you. A cheap one-day option needs everything to go right by tomorrow.

Give your idea enough runway to reach its target. Then set the level that tells you it’s wrong before you put money in.
