The 20 Minutes That Let Me Trade a Tape Nobody Should Touch

Hey trader,

Thursday morning, the NQ opened with an 83 ATR – high volatility.

My tick chart could not keep up with the tape.

Price was printing 77 on the NQ futures while my ActiveTrader platform still showed 55.

A gap that wide between the chart and the ladder is the market telling you to keep your hands off the mouse.

I said as much to the room. “It was a 83 ATR, so we got to back off a bit. Just got to chill.”

Here is where most traders shut the laptop and walk away.

That call keeps you out of trouble…but it also leaves you with nothing to lean on when the tape finally settles.

I went in a different direction. I ran 20 minutes of homework… and it’s the entire reason I finished the day with three winners on a tape almost nobody wanted to touch.

Let me show you exactly how it worked, so you can do the same thing Monday.

Homework Is the Permission Slip

I pulled up Monday’s session and started busting through it setup by setup. Come from the red line to the yellow line, mark the entry, check whether it paid.

The first 45 minutes of that replay went six for six. Every setup off the levels paid.

I stopped and pointed it out to the room. A run like that answers its own question. You lock the day in. You protect it.

By the time I finished the full session, the tally was 60 setups, 43 winners, 16 losers. The whole exercise took about 20 minutes.

Sit with that for a second. Twenty minutes of clicking through a replay gave me hard proof that the two levels I trade were doing their job the day before.

That proof is what let me engage a scary tape a few hours later. I was not hiding from it.

I say this to the room constantly. When people email me that the strategy is not working, my first question back is simple. “Are you doing homework? If not, why?”

Why I Will Not Just Send You an Alert

I get emails asking me to skip all of this and just send a text. Buy the 26 here. Sell it up top.

I understand the request. I cannot fill it.

“But I’m not an alert service with this. It’s not an alert service, it’s just not.”

The instrument moves too fast for an alert to help you. By the time you read a message and click, the trade is gone.

An alert also does nothing for you six months from now when you are trading this on your own. The homework builds the one thing an alert never will. That is your own confidence in the level.

That same homework is where our best recent upgrade came from. For months I watched the 77 long stall one point short of the first target.

In replay after replay it kept tagging 83 while my target sat at 84. We stopped splitting hairs over a single point and moved the bracket to a plus five and a plus 20.

Our homework stats catapulted the moment we made that change. That refinement came straight out of the reps.

What the Confidence Bought Me

The ATR stayed elevated most of the session. A payroll miss this morning sparked a hard reversal, and the tape got even faster.

I sat on my hands through the noise and waited for the levels to line up cleanly. Forcing a trade into that kind of speed is how you hand back a week of gains in one bar.

When the levels finally set up right, I took them. I shorted the 26 for a plus five. I shorted it again for the full plus 25.

Late in the run I got long the 77 and booked another plus 25. That put me at 55 handles for the day. “Day done.”

Those were three clean trades on a tape I had already warned the room was too fast to force. I did not take them on bravado.

I told everyone exactly why I pulled the trigger. “Only reason I did it is because our homework is telling us that the levels are freaking working, the first test and the second test.”

The chart backed it up. The market was crazy, with big swings and wicks stacked everywhere.

The 26 and the 77 held and paid anyway. The levels did their job while everything around them looked like chaos.

Running It Yourself Monday

Build the replay habit into your week and it stops feeling like a chore. Pull up a recent session with your two levels loaded. Start at the open and walk it forward bar by bar.

For each setup, log the same three things. Note where price came from. Mark the entry. Record whether it paid or stopped.

That test stays objective from the first setup to the last. It removes all the guessing about whether the levels are still good.

You do not need to grind through an entire day to get value from it. If you only have two hours to trade, do your homework in those two hours.

If the morning is too wild to trade live, use that dead time to run replays instead of walking away frustrated. Twenty minutes of this will teach you more about trusting your levels than any indicator you could bolt onto the chart.

The payoff shows up on days exactly like this one. When the tape goes ballistic and your gut screams at you to run, your homework becomes the voice that tells you the levels are still working.

That voice is what let me step into a tape nobody should touch and walk away with a solid day.

See you in the room Monday.
