The Equal-Weight Tell

Hey trader,

Someone just placed a bearish trade that does not care what the S&P 500 does next week.

When traders want to short the index, they reach for SPY. That conflates two separate bets, because the S&P 500 right now is really five or six stocks carrying 494 passengers.

The Block Hunter Console flagged two put verticals on RSP Thursday at the $202.50 and $195 strikes.

Combined size runs north of 20,000 contracts per tranche across two expirations.

The trade expresses a breadth thesis with defined risk. It does not need a crash to pay out. It needs the 494 names outside the Mag Seven to fail to participate.

Next week’s earnings cycle decides whether the institution behind this print was early or right on time.

And here’s how I see it playing out.

Why RSP Flow Is Not SPY Flow

RSP weights every S&P 500 stock equally. Apple counts the same as the smallest REIT in the index.

That structure means RSP reflects what the average company is actually doing, stripped of the distortion that comes from five or six mega-caps dominating the tape.

Right now the dispersion trade is running hot. Institutions are selling puts on the SPX and using the premium to buy calls on Mag Seven names.

SPY benefits from that flow because the Mag Seven accounts for more than 30% of its weight. RSP gets nothing from it. Each constituent contributes roughly 0.2% to the index, so Nvidia ripping higher does not move it.

Why Seven Days of Life Matters

The May 1 vertical expires seven trading days from today. That date lands immediately after the heaviest earnings session of the quarter.

Microsoft and Amazon report April 29 after the close. Apple reports April 30 after the close.

If the Mag Seven prints strong and the index rallies, the dispersion trade gets another leg higher. The weighted index climbs, but RSP still does not participate because the average company is flat or down.

If the Mag Seven disappoints and the index rolls over, RSP collapses faster because it never got the lift. Both outcomes favor the position.

The scenario that hurts the trade is a broad, even rally across all 500 names. That outcome runs directly against what the flow has been signaling for weeks.

How the Trade Is Structured

The put vertical caps the downside exposure to the cost of the spread. Institutions reach for this structure when they have a defined catalyst inside a known window.

  • Buy the RSP $202.50 put
  • Sell the RSP $195 put
  • Spread width: $7.50
  • Expirations: May 1 (post-earnings) and May 15 (continuation)
  • Combined size on the Console: more than 20,000 contracts per tranche
  • Max risk: debit paid at entry
  • Direction: Bearish on breadth
  • Catalyst: Mag Seven earnings April 29 and April 30, dispersion trade exhaustion, equal-weight underperformance

A retail trader following this flow does not need to size at the institutional level. A single $7.50 wide put vertical at these strikes carries the same risk profile at any contract count.

The Thesis Hidden Inside the Strikes

SPY put flow and RSP put flow can look identical in a raw feed. The strikes, sizes, and deltas often match closely.

What differs is the thesis each structure expresses.

A SPY short says the entire tape rolls over. A RSP short says something more specific. The Mag Seven continues to prop up the weighted index while the 494 other names slide.

The dispersion trade is the fuel for that specific view. As long as SPX puts get sold and Mag Seven calls get bought, RSP constituents are the names left behind.

What the Console Is Tracking Now

The Block Hunter Console flagged both RSP put verticals yesterday along with a 22,000-contract SPY put print at the $620 strike for July 17 expiration and a 15,000-contract IYR put trade at the $99 strike for May 1.

The prints tell a consistent story. Institutions are adding hedges and breadth shorts into the Mag Seven earnings window, not after it.

The RSP trade is the cleanest expression of that thesis on the board. Next week’s earnings is the catalyst that turns this from positioning into resolution.

See exactly how Block Hunter catches institutional positioning before the crowd catches on.
