What’s actually holding this market up will scare you

A green screen can lie to you, and most days it does.

The S&P can be up 30 points and tell you absolutely nothing about the health of the market. The number on the screen is a headline. What matters is what is underneath it, and underneath is where the real story always lives.

Here is what I mean.

This morning the S&P was up 30 handles and looked perfectly healthy. So I went down the list of the names that actually move this market. Apple, flat. Google, flat. Microsoft, down. Amazon, flat. Meta, down. Nvidia, up a buck and a half, which is nothing.

The monsters of tech, the stocks that carry the whole S&P, had not moved at all.

So what was holding the market up?

Garbage.

Intel catching a bid. AMD back in favor. Micron bouncing after getting hammered. The entire rally was riding on the back of the semiconductors and a handful of beaten-down names that finally caught a day in the sun.

That is the tell, and it is not a good one.

When the S&P is green but the giants are flat and the only thing working is a sector bounce, you do not have a strong market. You have a narrow one.

A market leaning its full weight on 5 or 6 stocks.

And a narrow market is a fragile market. It would take exactly one major tech name showing real selling to undo the whole thing. One. Your little Intel rally, your Micron pop, all of it gets erased the second a true heavyweight rolls over, because those small names were never strong enough to hold the S&P up on their own.

This is why I never trust the headline number.

The advance-decline line, the leadership underneath, the question of who is actually carrying the load, that is the market. The green print on top is just the part everybody looks at.

So the next time you see the S&P up and feel like you are missing the party, do the thing almost nobody does.

Look under the hood.

Ask which names are actually moving it. If the answer is the giants, you have something real.

If the answer is a semiconductor bounce and a few resurrected losers, you have a mirage, and mirages do not last.

Tomorrow I want to read the tape with you live while one of the biggest events in market history unfolds.

SpaceX goes public, the largest IPO ever, and I am going live all day with Brandon Chapman, Blake Young, Tony Rago, and the rest of the crew for a free event we are calling SpaceX IPO Friday Funday.

We start at 9:15 AM ET and run through the close, breaking down what is real and what is noise in real time, right alongside you. No cost, one time only.

Save your spot here.

To your success,

Don Kaufman
